SoC & CAPS Joint Seminar on Role of Media in Conflict Reporting & Peace Building

Prospects and Challenges for India

Information and mass communication apparatuses are one of the most powerful weapons in altering and to some extent managing the dynamics of conflicts and peace building efforts. The transformation of the mediaspherefrom analogous to the digital platform has posed both challenges and opportunities before the world. With the shrinking time and space boundaries and the dissemination of information (misinformation) occurring within a fraction of second via click of a button, the deliberation on the conflicts in high voltage zones and peace-building measures to resolve the conflicts through narratives are staring at a mammoth challenge. As the new world order changes from bi-polarity to new multipolarity (polycentric) and the media ecology metamorphosing from traditional to digital, brings more stakeholders, who are heterogeneous and at times virtually anonymous, the reflection on the importance of the role of media in the global conflict in general and regional conflict, in particular, grows many folds. Every discourse constructed and transmitted by mass communication, have an impact on public discourses, mould or cultivate perceptions and works as a catalyst in the decision making of the masses, especially during the conflicts and war. Thus making the knowledge of geo-strategic issues, regional conflicts indispensible topics for the budding media professionals of future. Keeping that in view and in an endeavor to understand and analyze the impact of media in hyper-mediated viral world on the conflicts that are brewing in the region and peace-building efforts to disentangle those conflicts, the School of Communication (SoC), GD Goenka University (GDGU) in collaboration with the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS), is organizing a Joint Seminar based on the theme, “Role of Media in Conflict Reporting & Peace Building: Prospects and Challenges for India”.
